Dhekorgorah- Past and Present |
|
Dhekorgorah is situated to the North-West of the Johat town. Dhekorgorah is really not the name of a place; rather, it is an adjective of an ancient village. The complete name of the place is-Dhekorgorah Komargaon. Here, “Dhekor” means a crooked metallic support of a sedan, (Kekoradola) formerly used by the members of the royal family and ministers of Assam. The word “Gorah” means, Constructed. Komargaon refers to a place, where black smitheries were established for the construction of “Dhekor” “Dao” and other iron weapons needed to fight in the battlefield. As the ordinary black-smiths had no dexterity for the construction of “Dhekor”, the blacksmiths of the village under consideration, were assigned the duties of the construction there of. History reveals that the capital of Assam was shifted from Rongpur to Jorhat, in A.D 1794.The Buragohain, (Prime ministers) - Purananda, who was badly busy in fighting the Moa Maries, finding no other way, brought his family members to this place and gave them proper settlement. The place, where the kith and Kim of the prime minister were settled, still known as the “Buragohaind” tol. This place is undoubtedly a part of Dhekorgorah kamar gaon referred to above. The Prime minister, following the British practice organized two guilds of Kari fighters. They were known as “Burakuri” (Senior Twenty) & “Dekakuri” (Young twenty). The Burakuri road and Dekakuri Namghor still reminds us the actions of Prime Minister Purnananda. In fact, Dhekorgorah Kamar gaon was a part of vast Monaimazi village of king Rajeswar Singh’s time. The Ahom Government at first settled two expert dhekar makers in this newly carved out Area. Their names were bar oza and saru oza respectively. It may be supposed that these were not the real names, but address of honour. The present generation of Dhekorgorah black smith claim to have come down from one Banamali oza, who happened to the supreme supervisor in charge of common casting and sword making. Under his direct supervision, one thousand eight experts had to Work. [Nasha Nakuri Pati] The Bor oza and Saru oza had been the Kith and Kin of this Banamali Oza; of the preceding vage. The entire Monaimazi village became famous only when Kuranganayani, a Daughter of Manipuri king was given in marriage to King Rajeswar Singha of Assam. In those days, Assamese people called the Manipuri’s as “Magalu” or “Magalou”. The name Magalu Khat is still in extant in that place. In all probality, the name Malow, (Malow Ali) too comes from the word –“Magalou” or pure Manipuri word-“Emalow’, meaning land of mother i.e., of Kuranganayani. In the region of King Rajeswar Singha, the name Dhekorgorah was unknown. It was only made known to all after the year A.D1794, when the Moamaria resurrection was completely suppressed and Jorhat declared as the new capital of the Ahom monarchs.By and by, the number of Dhekorgorah blacksmith grew larger and larger. The black-smitheries received royal patronage for the construction of Sword, Dao, (Cutting instruments) Katari (Knife), Axe, Spears, Arrows etc.The Kakati or scribe had to be appointed for keeping the record. The Ahom Government maintained regular aviaries for the training of hawks. There was a “Carai choing” or hawks training centre in the neighbour –hood of Dhekorgorah. The Senchowa Barua was placed in charge of such past time. For the management of carai chongs or aviaries, this officer was held responsible. He invited the king and nobles to witness the test of hawks. The workers and officers of this department lived in a part of Dhekorgorah village of ancient time. One can even today find the descendants of hawks-trainers (Senchowas) to the southern part of this village. It is said to note that after the independence of India, the Government deforested the Sarucorai forest with a view to giving settlement to refugees. As a consequence there fore, aviaries located in the midst of this forest, went out of existence. It is not possible to trace the training place at present. One can see only a large raised earthen mound, popularly known as “Ting tingia bheti”, which in all Probability, was used for the training of Hawks.
